Not only did my French language skills improve dramatically, but I learned a great amount about the French culture – including some of the history of French cuisine (I even took a cooking class) and its significance to the French people. I visited several major museums and saw artists from Monet and Renoir to Picasso and Miro. I attended ballets and operas and took dance classes in the Marais district.

My deepest understanding of French culture came from simply living there on a daily basis. I lived with a very sweet French host mother and interacted with and observed the Parisian people every day. Walking the streets of Paris, buying baguettes at boulangeries, and living within the culture, I learned an immense amount about the French identity and personality.

My time in France taught me to be more perceptive to other cultures and more accepting of their customs. My fascination with foreign cultures led me to study abroad the following summer in Latin America, to learn about a new language, and many new cultures. I plan to teach English in Japan after graduation and eventually to practice medicine and volunteer abroad.
