The Duke University Department of Philosophy and the Duke Office of Study Abroad will offer a four-week, one-course program at Bogazici University (formerly, Robert College), Istanbul, under the direction of Professor Güven Güzeldere of Duke. Professor Güzeldere will coordinate the program on-site and teach a philosophy course entitled, Thinking About God: The Nature of Religious Belief at the Crossroads of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. There is no prerequisite for the program, except the desire to learn about and explore philosophical and cultural ideas, and be committed to participating actively in the program. Students from all disciplines are welcome.

Bogazici University is a strikingly beautiful campus that sits on a hill by the Bosphorus, the water passage that divides the continents of Asia and Europe. Istanbul is an incredibly rich city in its multi-cultural history, arts, and contemporary life. Students will have the opportunity to explore the city and visit the most important sites of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition throughout their stay.

COURSE AND CREDIT

PHIL 135/ CULANTH 120B/ RELIGION 161V/ TURKISH 136/ICS 102F Thinking About God CCI, CZ, EI This course will examine the nature of religious belief at the crossroads of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The course will also provide an analytical examination of the bases for belief in God and the possibility of an afterlife, the relation between faith and reason, and interrelated issues concerning the justification for and the content of religious belief. We will also briefly consider the similarities and differences on these issues among Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Taught by Professor Güven Güzeldere. One course credit.

FACULTY

Professor Güven Güzeldere, Director and Associate Professor of Philosophy. He is also the director of Exploring the Mind FOCUS Program, and holds the Duke University R. K. Lublin teaching award for 1998-99. He is the author and editor of articles and books in philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and history of psychology. Professor Güzeldere is a native of Istanbul and an alumnus of Bogazici University.

EXCURSIONS

The program will have weekly tours of historical sites of worship in Istanbul, such as the Byzantine churches of Hagia Sophia and the Holy Savior of Chora (both museums at present), the Blue Mosque and the Suleymaniye Mosque complex, and the Ahrida synagogue. The course also includes a week-long trip, first to the early Christian underground cities at Cappadocia, and then down the Aegean coast, visiting the most important Greco-Roman sites that hold a central place in the philosophical and religious history of Asia Minor. These sites include, among others: Assos (the home of Aristotle's Academy), Troy, the Pergamon Acropolis (where the ruins of Zeus Altar are located), Ephesus and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the World ), the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John. All transportation and accommodation costs, meals, and museum entrance fees during the excursion are included in the program fee.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Students will be housed in the Bogazici University dormitories, in single rooms with high-speed Internet connections. They will have full access to the library and campus facilities such as the cafeterias, gym, and swimming pools.  Meals can be purchased at inexpensive restaurants, fast-food places, and cafes within walking distance of the dormitories. The dormitories are within walking distance of the university campus, and located at a lively section of the city. Public transportation to other parts of the city through the municipal bus system, subway, and ferryboats is available, inexpensive, and easily accessible. Istanbul is generally a safe and tourist-friendly city in comparison to other cities of the world of similar size (approximately 10 million people). It is culturally very lively, with many outdoor concerts and festivals going on through the summer.

Transportation for the week-long excursion will include air travel and private air-conditioned coaches with a professional driver and tour guide, exclusively for the program. While on tour, students will be housed in three star or boutique hotels with private baths, accommodating two students per room.

ENGAGING DUKE IN TURKEY

The DukeEngage program will last for 6 weeks (July 5 – August 16, 2008) immediately following the Duke in Turkey Summer Program, under the supervision of program coordinator, Sarah Carpenter and Professor Guven Guzeldere. Accommodations, airfare, enhancement activities, and a stipend will be provided for the student participants.
