The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies and the Office of Study Abroad of Duke University will offer a language and culture study program at St. Petersburg University in St. Petersburg, Russia. The program will be directed by Professor Edna Andrews of the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies of Duke University.

St. Petersburg, located near the Gulf of Finland, is the second largest Russian city. Some of the most outstanding features of St. Petersburg are its beautiful palaces and churches and the “White Nights”, which peak at the end of June.

COURSES & CREDITS

Students at all levels of Russian may participate. Each student will register for two Duke Russian language courses appropriate to the student's level. Language placement will be based on coursework and a placement examination. All students are required to take a test at the end of the program. Grades will be based on performance in class and all written examinations (including the final). Examinations in the program will be developed and graded by the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies of Duke University. Given the intense nature of this program, late arrival and/or early departure is not permitted. Pass/fail option or auditing is also not permitted.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

All classes are taught in Russian. A minimum of two semesters of Russian at the college level, or equivalent, is therefore strongly suggested. However, depending on the number of participants, beginning students may be accepted. All students who are accepted into the program must take a placement test before the spring semester ends.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

Students will reside in university housing or home stays in St. Petersburg, and in hotels on excursions. The program fees include three meals a day (except on excursions). Meals will be available either at the university cafeteria, or prepared by the students in their apartments (food provided). Home stays are available on a limited basis for those students who prefer to live with a family.

PROGRAM ITINERARY

An excursion of several days to some area in the Russian Federation is being arranged, and will be announced later this fall. During the last week of the program, the group will be "on tour" in Moscow. In each of the Russian cities, the program will include visits to major sights as well as to cultural performances in the evenings (ballet, opera, theater, etc.). The program then returns to St. Petersburg for departure. Weekends and afternoons will be used for films and excursions to local sites and other cities near St. Petersburg.

TRANSPORTATION

For the Duke in Russia summer program, students are required to fly to St. Petersburg round-trip as a group on a group flight arranged by Finnair. This group flight will depart New York 's JFK airport on May 7, 2008, on Finnair, and the return flight on Finnair to New York will depart St. Petersburg on June 28. The cost of this group flight is included in the overall program fee listed above, and once you have confirmed your seat, no portion of the flight is refundable.

The summer program director, in conjunction with the group's travel agent, will assist students with connecting flights if they wish. Otherwise, each student is responsible for making his/her own domestic flight reservation to and from New York 's JFK airport, and any domestic flights are at the student's expense (not included in the program fee).
