DUKE IN INDIA
CANCELLED FOR SUMMER 2007 - NEXT OFFERED IN 2009

Modern Media and Gender Studies

The Duke University Department of Asian and African Languages and Literature (AALL) and the Office of Study Abroad will offer a two-course six and one half-week program in India in the summer of 2007. The program introduces students to two vital aspects of contemporary Indian society: (1) the power of modern media, particularly Bollywood and television; and (2) the uses of traditional expressive culture to advance rights and opportunities for women. The program is directed by Professor Satti Khanna of the Department of Asian & African Languages and Literature at Duke University.

The first week of the program will be based in Mumbai (Bombay) with visits to film studios in Bandra and guest lectures by filmmakers and film technicians. Students will be offered numerous opportunities to become acquainted with megacity culture in India. The second week of the program will be based in Pune, home to the National Film and Television Institute of India, to the National Film Archive of India and to a thriving Marathi theater. The third week of the program will be based in the national capital of Delhi, with a visit to Agra for the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri.

The final three and half weeks of the program will be based in the lake city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Udaipur is an excellent site for inquiry into the culture of small town India, a culture insufficiently studied in contrast to village India and metropolitan India. The program concludes on June 29 with a return to New Delhi by train.
