Nigel Nicholson, Professor-in-Charge: Nigel Nicholson is the Walter Mintz Professor of Classics at Reed College
in Portland, Oregon, where he has taught since 1995. He received his BA
from Oxford University in 1990 and his PhD from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1994. From 1994 to 1995 he taught at Wellesley College, MA.
He is the author of "Aristocracy and Athletics in Archaic and Classical
Greece," published by Cambridge University Press in 2005, as well as
various articles on Pindar and other subjects in Arethusa, Classical
Journal, Classical World, Classical Philology and other journals. At
present he is working on two projects, one comparing the praise poetry of
Pindar and Ted Hughes, and one examining the use and meaning of the
anecdotes told about archaic athletes. A committed teacher, he was named
Oregon Professor of the Year in 2004 by the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching.
