ACADEMICS

All ICCS-Sicily students are required to take four courses per semester. Each course is valued at one Duke credit, which has a suggested value of four semester credit hours, and meets for a minimum of 35 contact hours. There are three mandatory courses: Mediterranean Cultures, Greek or Latin, and Italian language. For the fourth subject, students may take either a second classical language or art history.

Mediterranean Cultures Course This will be the core of the ICCS-Sicily program, covering a wide historical context, from pre-history to post-classical times, but focusing on physical evidence and topography over a much wider area than the host city and its immediate environs. There will be full-day excursions weekly, within Catania or its immediate environs (to sites in eastern and central Sicily, such as Enna, Leontini, Acrae, Piazza Armerina, and Morgantina.) The course will also include two extended field trips (approximately one week each) to sites in western Sicily ( Agrigento, Selinunte, Marsala, Motya, Segesta, Palermo, Himera, or Cefalù), and possibly to sites in North Africa. Syllabus.

Italian Language Courses

Italian will be required of all students in the ICCS-Sicily program, and it will be offered at both the elementary and more advanced levels.
