On April 27, 1994 the first free elections took place in the Republic of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was elected President of the "New" South Africa in a landslide victory. This was the end of the racially oppressive Apartheid regime. Since then, major reforms are taking place in this most important, wealthiest and second largest country of sub-Saharan Africa, reforms which focus especially on education, housing, and health care.

Duke has made arrangements with two of the finest universities in South Africa. Duke undergraduateshave the opportunity to experience for themselves the exciting post-apartheid transformation of South Africa by enrolling directly on two South African university campuses.

Like all South African universities, the institutions participating in South Africa Direct offer three-year B.A./B.S. programs, broadly based upon the models of British universities. On each campus a wide range of undergraduate courses in social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences are available. Each also offers special courses in the field of African Studies.

Students attending South Africa Direct will have the application fee of the South African universities waived. Tuition, room (and at Rhodes University, sometimes board) will be paid through Duke directly to the South African universities. This eases your entry to South Africa and speeds your application process at the requested university.

The Duke study abroad fee of $2,350 (2007-2008 rate) per semester applies to students who participate in South Africa Direct. The study abroad fee is expected to increase in 2008-2009, most likely at the same percentage as the increase in Duke's tuition for that academic year.

Please note that the South African calendar, being in the southern hemisphere, is exactly the reverse of ours. The term beginning in February and ending in June is the first semester. The second semester begins in late July and ends in November. There is a long break in December and January, and mid-semester breaks in each semester. Students matriculating in July will enter mid-year in the South African second semester.
