Dear Global Education Office:
My study abroad experience was phenomenal, and I strongly encourage each and every Duke student to take advantage of this opportunity.
I applied to the Duke in Spain program because I wanted the opportunity to really surround myself with the culture. I am fascinated by the Spanish language and culture, and to this day I dream about returning to visit my host family and teachers. We went to birthday celebrations with my host family, mingled with their friends and relatives and so much more.
There are so many moments to choose from, but I would have to say that one of my most memorable was walking around the city one day after class and being approached in Spanish by natives. I was ecstatic because my dream was coming true. After weeks of having tourists and natives alike approach me in English, finally the natives thought of me, not so much as one of them, but at least as someone who was capable of adapting to their culture. I proudly held entire conversations in Spanish, and I believe that this experience really broadened my horizons.
When I returned to Duke, I made it a priority to continue speaking in Spanish with friends, and I maintain constant contact with my host family, whom I plan to visit upon my return to Madrid in the very near future.
My fellow Blue Devils, PLEASE take advantage of this amazing opportunity. I promise you won't regret it!
