On-site Administration - Madrid, Spain
The Duke in Madrid program is housed in the offices of the Duke Center for Hispanic Studies on the Universidad San Pablo campus. The resident director is available year-round for academic or personal assistance. The administrative director places participants with families in Madrid and helps students resolve everyday problems. Contact information for the staff will be provided upon acceptance.
Resident Director: Dr. Antonio Ramos-Gascón, a native of Madrid, holds a law degree from the Universidad de Madrid (1967), a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of California-La Jolla (1970), and a doctor of Spanish philology from the Universidad de Madrid (1973). He is a professor emeritus of Spanish literature at the University of Minnesota and has served as resident director of the Duke Center for Hispanic Studies in Madrid since 1998. Professor Ramos-Gascón's fields of research include 19th century Spanish novel and essay, 20th century Spanish poetry, 15th century popular poetry, the Generation of 1898, ideology, and historiography.
Administrative Director-Madrid: Nuria García-Jaraíz, a native of Madrid, holds a degree in philology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1995) and is currently working towards a Ph.D. in International Relations and Contemporary History at UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia). She also has a pending degree in German and French Studies at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas. Ms. García-Jaraíz was a visiting lecturer and advisor for the Spanish Corridor at Duke University (1995-96), and has often assisted with the Duke in Spain Summer Program, most recently as an instructor. She served as a graduate assistant for the Duke in Madrid program in 1996-97, and has worked for the Duke Center for Hispanic Studies since 1997. Meet Nuria in our facebook group!
Assistant Coordinator: Eva Barroso earned a degree in English philology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Prior to working for the Duke in Madrid program, Ms. Barroso taught English and Spanish at various language institutes and schools in Madrid. She has worked for the Duke Center for Hispanic Studies since 2001 and often assists with the Duke in Spain summer program. Meet Eva in our facebook group!
