Fall 1967 From Carol Dellaquila Didier: I too have many fond memories of my semester with ICCS on "Old Ulysses Street". I loved wandering the streets of Rome and the roads of Italy with my fellow students. A special hello to Jim Farris - I hope the sisters have forgiven you the headlocks you and Dave Matz subjected them to. I finally made it back to Italia in 2001, leading my family through Roma as if I had never left. I was in Positano when the Trade Towers were attacked. It was disconcerting walking amidst so much beauty while my country endured one of her darkest hours. So fellas - I think we should all go back for one more limone gelato and a walk in Trastevere. (1 Feb 2006) From James Farris: Greetings to any and all my classmatess who lived at the original Il Centro on Old Ulysses Street. I am happy to say that one semester changed my life. I am hopelessly in love with the Eternal City. I have been back to Italia 14 times since then, mostly with groups of my students. On one recent visit I got a tour of the "new" Centro and saw the original ping pong table where John D'arms and I used to play some heated matches. Our other professor was Dr. John Anderson of California. My most memorable Christmas Eve was spent in the ICCS library working on a paper. I would love to hear from Carol Dellaquila, Roy Rowe, Lawrence Stephens, Dave Noble, Dave Matz, or any of our group. Thanks, guys, for the wonderful memories. (5 January 2005) From Roy Rowe: Please pass on to the good folks from the Fall of 1967 that Roy Rowe is still alive and well. I retired in '01 from a career in The Last Frontier having worked at the University of Alaska Anchorage and in Alaska Native villages as a school administrator for 13 years. I am now in the Metro Atlanta area as Chair of the Educational Leadership Department at Kennesaw State University. This is my swan song gig for a few years, before I retire again and return to Anchorage. Please give my best to Jim Farris, Dave Matz, Dave Noble, etc. (28 July 2005) Fall 1974 (and Spring 1975) Tracy Barrett writes: My thirteenth
children's book, entitled On Etruscan Time, was recently published by
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. I dedicated it "alla memoria
di Giancarlo e Benedetta Galassi Beria" because without their help
I never would have been able to take the class at the Villa Giulia that
hooked me on Etruscan culture. Book no. eleven is a history of ancient
Greece, co-authored with Jennifer Roberts, and published by Oxford University
Press. There's information on both books at www.tracybarrett.com.
Fall 1981 Randy Broberg writes: I was at ICCS the Fall of 1981. I went on to graduate from Stanford in History and Classics in 1983 and later went to the University of Virginia School of Law which I completed in 1989. I've been an attorney in San Diego ever since. (21 March 2005) Spring 1985 Anastasia Ashman writes from Istanbul -- Old Rome to New Rome! Just published my first book, Tales from the Expat Harem: Foreign Women in Modern Turkey, a nonfiction anthology I co-edited with another American writer living in Istanbul. Meeting both popular and critical acclaim in Turkey, it's the #1 English language best-seller, and has been called "riveting" by world explorer Tim Severin, "insightful" by Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler, and lauded by the Turkish Foreign Minister as "important for the country". Other editions: it has been translated into Turkish as "Turkce Sevmek", and in March 2006 Seal Press will release the North American edition. See www.expatharem.com for further details, and more information about what else I've been up to since you last saw me! Spring 1991 Millie Burrell writes: I was a Centrista in 1991 and am getting ready to return to Italy this weekend to present my research at a conference in Siena. Although my research interests have taken a different avenue, I still call upon Latin and Greek fairly daily with botanical derivatives. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Molecular Biology with emphasis on plant genetics at Texas A&M University and can not adequately articulate how much it means to present my work product in a place now so much a part of me--because of that semester in Rome. I wish all of my fellow Centristi well and hope they have found their paths. And I can't wait to get back on that lovely Italian soil! (5 May 2006) Fall 1993 Jerome Haines writes: After cleaning out an old shelf (full of OCTs) this weekend, I came across a poster of a youthful Lance Armstrong that I had up my wall while I was in Rome. No one really knew him then, but times sure have changed. (And he's already retired!) My email address is jeromehaines@gmail.com. (12 October 2005) Spring 1998
