Information for Non-Duke Students

If you are not a student at Duke University, you are welcome to apply to a number of our programs. To find a list of those programs, go to 'Programs' and using the advanced search option, look for the search paramater "open to non-Duke students." Select "yes" and then hit the search button.

To apply online through this website you first need to create an account. To do this, search for a program using the advanced search option on the Programs page. Select the program to which you wish to apply and click on the "apply now" button. At the bottom of the log-on box, you will see a link which says "New non-Duke applicants, click here to request a login." You will then be guided through the process of creating an account which will let you apply to a program.

All students enrolling through Duke will receive credits and grades as if the courses had been taken at Duke. While you are studying abroad, you will be registered at Duke as a non-degree student. Upon successful completion of the program, grades and credits are posted and an official Duke transcript will be sent upon your request. To request a transcript, you should fill out a Transcript Request form and send it to the Registrar, or you can request a transcript online through ACES.

Net ID

When you enroll in a Duke study abroad program, you will be sent a Duke Net ID and password by e-mail. Make sure to keep this in a safe place, and bring it with you on your study abroad. The Duke Net ID will allow you access to online resources at Duke, and you will need it if you wish to request a transcript online, or fill out the post program survey.

Postcard from Abroad

Dear Office of Study Abroad:

Riding up the side of a volcano above a crater lake on a donkey has become one of the "fun facts" I automatically share with new people in icebreaker games. As fun as that catch phrase seems, it cannot even begin to capture the value of my experience in Ecuador. The things that I learned from my experiences are something I will never forget and will influence me for the rest of my life.

Ecuador is a country filled with incredibly unique and exciting opportunities. It is a place where in the era of globalization you can find a truly distinct culture. Taking classes to learn about the different indigenous cultures and simultaneously visiting villages and receiving the warmest of welcomes, I enjoyed one of the most unique experiences I could have imagined. Through both hard times and exciting opportunities, it was an irreplaceable experience that challenged me to grow as an individual.

My host family was by far my favorite part. From trying to teach me salsa in the living room to watching movies produced in Ecuador, they showed me so many different things and really made me a part of the family. My family also had a very different perspective on politics that they loved to share with me. I came to understand a totally different ideology not only about politics but about societal structure as well. I saw first hand a point of view I had studied and misunderstood numerous times in classes at Duke.

After spending a semester abroad in Ecuador, I now recognize what I love about the United States, but also what I think should change. In the future I hope to take steps to make changes in our country based on some of the things I experienced in Ecuador.
