Duke University Global Education Office for Undergraduates

Program Schedule

Excursions

Because of the demands of the academic program, students who wish to travel should plan to do so either in June before the beginning of the program or following its completion in August.  Examples of past program excursions include: a tour of Stratford-upon-Avon and an evening production of the Royal Shakespeare Company; a day trip to London with an evening at the National Theatre; and a day trip to Bath.  Excursions take place on weekdays. Occasional short weekend trips to other cities are possible, but students should plan to spend most weekends in Oxford.

Travel Arrangements

Students are expected to make their own travel arrangements and must check in to New College on June 30.  Students departing from the U.S. will need to leave on June 29. Students will be required to check out on August 11.

Upon arrival in England, students must make their own way to Oxford; buses leave hourly from Heathrow airport for Oxford. Direct train service is also available hourly from Paddington Station in central London. Once in Oxford, students should take a cab or ask directions to New College in Holywell Lane. We estimate that the transport from London to New College, Oxford, will cost approximately $50. The porters at the Holywell Lodge make the room assignments and will give you initial assistance in answering questions.

Due to the intense nature of the program, late arrival and/or early departure from the program is not permitted. Lodging is not available at New College before or after the program dates. Students who wish to spend more time in Oxford should book accommodations early, as hotels fill up quickly in the summer.

Postcard from Abroad

Dear Global Education Office:

I took this picture outside Blenheim Palace, some 30 minutes away by bus from Oxford. In addition to being an astounding display of art and architecture, the palace itself is hailed as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. It was raining that day, hence the umbrella, but even the weather could not mask the beauty of the Duke of Marlborough's homestead and its surrounding gardens. These were the moments that made for a euphoric summer in England.

The Duke in Oxford program was truly an incredible and unforgettable experience. Those six weeks seemed to fly by, but I left Oxford with a much greater understanding of English culture and Victorian Literature and a host of new memories and friends. The individualized instruction I received from the Oxford tutorial system challenged me to dig deeper into my essay topics and to fortify my arguments against avenues of attack. Throughout the weeks, I learned to write and argue both quickly and effectively, and I am certain these skills will prove invaluable in my future English classes at Duke and throughout my law school endeavors.
