Duke University Global Education Office for Undergraduates

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Financial Aid

Duke undergraduates who receive need-based financial aid during the academic year are eligible to apply for financial aid for up to two Duke summer study abroad programs (and/or summer sessions in Durham) offering either one or two courses of credit. This aid is offered in addition to the eight basic academic-year semesters of financial aid. Eligibility for aid will be determined in the same manner as academic-year aid. Note: this policy does not apply to a summer abroad program taken prior to matriculation or after graduation from Duke.

Financial Aid applications for Duke Summer Study Abroad are available as part of the on-line application. To apply for financial aid, students must have applied to the program. Submit completed aid applications to the Global Education Office no later than 5 p.m., February 1.

Duke does not offer financial aid to non-Duke students. You are advised to consult with the Financial Aid Office at your home institution.

Duke Summer Scholarships

Duke undergraduates currently receiving financial aid may apply for the Stephenson Pope Babcock Scholarship. After the parental contribution, the Babcock Scholarship will replace the loan portion of the summer financial aid package. Seniors graduating in December 2011 or May 2012 or who have fulfilled their graduation requirements prior to the start of the fall 2012 semester are not eligible, nor are students who have previously received Babcock awards. Applications are available on-line and must be submitted to the Global Education Office no later than February 1.

NOTE: INCOMPLETE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.

Postcard from Abroad

Dear Global Education Office:

One weekend while I was in Geneva, our teachers took us hiking in the French Alps. This was a very special weekend for me because I really pushed myself to do something I didn’t think I’d ever be able to do. I climbed to the summit of a mountain- over 2000 meters high! I touched a glacier and saw the highest mountain in Europe. In this particular picture, I hiked up to Lac Blanc, a beautiful glacial lake on the top of a mountain. I was afraid at first because I had never been hiking before, but it was the most fun I’ve had in years.

I learned to really challenge myself this summer, not just in terms of hiking, but being independent and outgoing in getting to know my new and different surroundings. The most important thing to do while studying abroad, I discovered, is to really embrace your new home and try to become a member of it, not just a visitor. Duke in Geneva helped me see and experience some incredible places- Florence, Chamonix, Berlin, Paris, Switzerland- and discover a new favorite activity- hiking!
