Peter Burian, Professor in Charge
Peter Burian (Ph.D., Princeton) has taught at Duke since 1968. His main scholarly interests involve ancient Greek theater and the classical tradition in the arts. His publications include editions, translations, and studies of all the surviving fifth-century BCE playwrights. He is a contributor to the Cambridge Companion to Greek Tragedy and is currently editing a Companion to Aeschylus for Blackwell. He edits the series Greek Tragedy in New Translations for Oxford University Press, in which several of his translations appear, including Aeschylus’ Oresteia, a collaboration with series co-editor and poet Alan Shapiro. He has also published translations of Italian poetry.
Burian first lived in Rome as a high school exchange student in 1958-59 and first taught at ICCS in 1975-76, as an assistant professor. He returned to Rome for research in 1984-85, and has also spent two years on fellowship and teaching in Florence and Venice. He taught a Duke in Rome summer programs several times in the 1980s.
