Duke University Global Education Office for Undergraduates

Housing

Participants are housed in carefully selected Ecuadorian homes in Quito. When searching for host families, our main considerations are safety and security, as well as the student's potential for integration in the family setting. Host family relationships in Quito tend to be intimate and supportive.

Host families are evaluated each semester and every effort is made to maintain open communications between student, host family, and the Duke in the Andes staff.

Housing assignments are made based on availability and student backgrounds and preferences. Preferences are expressed at the time of application. Click here for housing preferences form.

STUDENT VOICES

"I loved eating meals with my host family. It really enabled me to get to know my house mother and bond with the family, which was crucial to not only improving my spanish communicating skills, but also in getting to know another culture."

-Fall 2007 Student Evaluation

"Living with a host family was an invaluable part of my abroad experience--in my opinion there is no other way to adequately learn about a new culture if you don't actually live with them."

-Fall 2008 Student Evaluation
