Duke University Global Education Office for Undergraduates

Academics

During the Fall Semester the Globalization Program of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences focuses on Cultural Heritage, offering a set of advanced courses on the issues related to Cultural Heritage Management, Innovation and Urban Cultural Policy.

During the Spring Semester the Globalization Program of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences focuses on Sustainable Development and the international division of labour.

Moreover, the School offers courses on Venice, namely courses on Venetian Art and Architecture, History of Ancient and Modern Venice, Italian Contemporary History and Italian language and culture for those students who come from the non Italian Universities, as well as stimulating extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

The Globalization Program aims to give VIU students the chance to take part in a study and research experience in an international context.

Students choose from among a listing of 12-20 courses that are taught by Duke and other university faculty at VIU. The normal courseload is 4 courses.

One of the four courses that students are required to take is an Italian language course, appropriate to the student's language ability and background.

Aside from the Italian language courses and two courses which pertain to Italian and Venetian history, the course listing changes completely every semester. Every semester an entirely new set of faculty members from consortium institutions around the world travel to Venice to teach at VIU, offering courses tied to the Fall and Spring themes of Cultural Heritage and Sustainability, respectively.

This means that the subject matter and the departments to which the courses pertain changes with each semester. The GEO-U works closely with departments at Duke to determine which Duke prefixes and number designations the courses will carry.
