In the fall of 1997, Duke began offering a fall semester program in Florence, Italy. Students are able to earn four course credits, in the humanities and social sciences, living in the atmosphere that inspired some of the greatest minds of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Dante, and Machiavelli.

Courses are taught in English by faculty members from Duke, the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin-Madison, and by members of the Florentine academic community. Although no previous knowledge of Italian is required, it is strongly recommended that students begin study of the language before arriving in Florence. During the semester in Italy, language study is required as one of the four courses.

This program is open to Duke students only.
