Duke in the Andes - Quito, Ecuador
Through course work, family life, community activities, and cultural experiences, the Duke in the Andes program seeks to instill in students a deeper knowledge of Ecuador and the Andean region. The academic and cultural content of the program emphasize the diversity of history and knowledge among the many Andean cultures and environments. The program affords students the opportunity to enroll in a consortium of local universities, choose from specialized curricula, work with a culturally diverse faculty, and participate in a variety of community-based, service learning experiences.
"A dynamic approach to study abroad. Students do more than take classes. They get the opportunity to compare and contrast between the different regions of Ecuador, and they have the opportunity to get involved in programs and projects that help to develop a better understanding of Ecuadorian culture and society."
– Sarah Ganley, Smith College - Fall 2007
"More than the academics, this program enabled me to learn things that I would never have learned at Duke. In a sense, it was a different kind of academics, I learned a language, how to communicate with others in this language, I learned about a different culture, and lived with a family and gained valuable memories and was profoundly affected."
